Excite: 「Robot」はヨンファさんによる作詞作曲。いつ頃できた曲なんですか？

Yonghwa: 2012年の4月ごろに作った曲です。「Where you are」（2ndシングル）もそうだったんですが、この曲もメロディーよりリズムからまず作っていきました。曲のテーマが最初に浮かぶと、書けるのが早いんですね。ジョンシンが最初に聴いて、すごく気に入ってくれた曲でもあります。

Excite: ちょっと大人っぽい曲ですよね？

Yonghwa: 僕がちょっと大人になりましたので（笑）。

Excite: そういう面を今回は出そう、と思ったんですか？

Yonghwa: いや、それはもちろん自然に出て来たものですよ（笑）。

Excite: （笑）。自分のしたいことが思うようにできない、という心の葛藤を描いた歌詞だと感じましたが、具体的にそういう経験がヨンファさん自身にもあったんでしょうか？

Yonghwa: もちろんあります。それは誰にでもありますよね？　歌詞自体は、周りの人が忙しそうに仕事をしているのを見ていて、浮かんできた想いを綴ったものなんですが。

Excite: CNBLUEの皆さんは2012年、オリコン1位になるなど、夢が順調に叶っているように見えますが、そんな中でこういう曲が生まれて来るのは少し意外な気もします。

Jonghyun: いや、僕らも同じ年ぐらいの友達と結局は同じです。夢に向かって頑張っていますが、ストレスはみんな同じだと思っています。“ロボット”じゃないですからね。この曲は現代人の悩みを描いていて、自分の人生ではあるけど、いろんな状況・現実といった他のもののせいでちゃんとできない、自分の夢を叶えられない…でも諦めるのはもったいない、という思いを歌った曲にしたいな、と。そういう状態をロボットに例えて、ヨンファお兄さんが歌詞を作ったんだと思うんですよね。

Minhyuk: ほとんどの人が共感する気持ちなんじゃないかな？と思います。僕自身は最近そういう葛藤はないんですけど、年末だからテレビの番組でやることがいっぱいあるので、それが大変ではありますね（笑）。

Jonghyun: この悩みは、小学生も幼稚園児も皆あると想いますよ。

Excite: 年を重ねるごとに強まっていく感情のようにも思いますが、どうでしょうか？

Jonghyun: 年を取ったら、現実やいろんなものが立ちはだかってくるし、自分だけじゃなくて周りもそれは一緒だから、どんどん悩みが大きくなるとは思います。

Minhyuk: 僕は幼ければ幼いほど葛藤があるんじゃないか？と想います。年を取れば取るほど、心は楽になるような気がします。これはあくまでも僕の考えですけど。

Excite: 人から何か言われても、“自分は自分だ”と思えるからでしょうか？

Minhyuk: それはちょっと分かりませんが、大人になればなるほど、考えが広がるんじゃないかな？と想います。

Excite: では、ミンヒョクさんも今は広い心で生きられていますか？

Minhyuk: 僕はまだまだ狭いです（笑）。

Jonghyun: 僕は、年を取ったら自分の“責任”もどんどん大きくなるから、そのせいでもっとストレスになるんじゃないかな？と思います。小さい頃は守ってくれる大人もいるし、責任はないですからね。

Yonghwa: 大人になったほうがストレスが多くなるんじゃないか？って僕は思います。結婚したり子どもができたらそれに対する責任も出て来るでしょうし。小さい時にはみんなお母さんが守ってくれますけどね。自分的には、曲を書く時に一番ストレスがあるんですけど、限られた時間の中で書かなければいけないのがストレスになるんですよね。

Excite: “ファンはこういう曲を聴きたいだろうなあ”という期待と、自分が作りたい曲、その間で葛藤することもありますか？

Yonghwa: そういう負担はないですね。

Excite: 両方の面があるのはいいんじゃないですか（笑）。ミンヒョクさんは最初聴いた時どう思いました?

Minhyuk: 最初聴いた時に、クリスマス・キャロルっぽい曲だと思いました.

Yonghwa: 例えば「Mr.KIA(Know It All)」もそうですけど、こういうイギリスっぽい曲は昔からよく作っていたんですよね。アレンジができる前までは、実はキャロルという雰囲気ではなかったんです。アレンジをやりながらどんどんそうなっていきました。

Excite: Starlit Night」は作詞作曲がジョンヒョンさんですが、どんな想いの中から生まれて来た曲なんでしょうか？

Jonghyun: アリーナツアーの中盤ぐらいで新潟でライヴをしたんですけど、すごく盛り上がって幸せだなあと思ったその夜、空を見たら偶然に流れ星を見て。その時“この気持ちで曲を作ろう！”と思って作りました。今年一年応援してくれたファンの方へのお返しとして皆さんにプレゼントするような、“ありがとう”という気持ちを届けたいという曲です。ライヴの最後に皆さんと一緒に歌えたらいいなあ、というイメージで作りました。だから、なるべく簡単で、だけどすごく大きな意味のある歌詞にしました。

Excite: ハンドクラップも入っていて、大勢で輪になって歌っているような温かい空気を感じます。

Jonghyun: 完全にライヴを考えながら作りましたね。難しいことは全くナシで、一緒に盛り上がれるように。メンバーに聴かせたら、「アンコールで演奏するラストソングみたいだ」と言っていましたね。この曲は、歌がすごく上手い人というよりも、純粋な声が欲しいと思ったので、デモ音源ではガイド（仮歌のボーカル）をミンヒョクにお願いしたんです。朝早くてミンヒョクはまだ寝ていて、「ちょっとお願い」と起こしたらすごく面倒くさそうな顔をして歌ってくれたんですけど（笑）。シングルでは結局僕が歌いましたが、あのガイドソングも良かったんですよね。ミンヒョクの声はやっぱりいいなあと思いました。

Minhyuk: ありがとうございます（笑）。歌うために起こされて、歌った後もう1回寝ようと思ったんですけど、メロディーが頭の中に残ってしまって眠れなかったのを覚えています。

Excite: それだけ印象深かったということでしょうか？

Minhyuk: 無意識のうちに、とても印象的だったということでしょうね。

Jonghyun: いいメロディーだったから忘れられなかったんでしょうね（笑）。

Excite: 作曲者としてヨンファさんとジョンヒョンさんとではカラーが違いますが、お互いに影響を与え合う部分はあるんですか？

Yonghwa: ないですね！（笑）

Jonghyun: わざわざ「違うスタイルでやろう」という話は全然しないんですけど、別々に作る時にはただ自分がやりたいことをやるので、曲を作るその瞬間には他のものが本当に何も見えないんです。だから、影響はあまりないですね。逆に一緒に作る時は影響を受けますね、「こういうのもあるんだなあ」って。

Yonghwa: ジョンヒョンはどこかへ行くたびに、知らない人にも聴かせながら「この曲どうですか？」って聞いてましたよ（笑）。

Jonghyun: それはヨンファも同じですよ（笑）。作り終わったものを誰かに聴いてもらいたいのは、曲を作る人ならばみんな同じだと思います。「どうですか？　どうですか？」って反応を見ながら、足りない部分は直して。

Excite: 10月のさいたまスーパーアリーナでのライヴを観させていただいたんですが、演出も素敵で、ロックバンドとしてのカッコよさを再認識できた、とても素晴らしいライヴでした。ボーカルの方以外も全員歌が上手いということにもビックリしました。

Yonghwa: 僕たちみんな、歌が上手なんです（笑）。

Jonghyun: いえいえ、ヘタクソです！

Excite: 今日はジョンシンさんがいらっしゃらないのが残念ですが…。

Jonghyun: ジョンシンは昔は一番下手だったんですけど、最近上手くなりましたね。

Yonghwa: 一生懸命頑張って、自信が付いたんでしょうね。最近では、みんなで歌うとジョンシンの声しか聞こえないぐらい上手いんですよ。

Excite: MCも、即興で歌を披露する場面でも、チームワークの良さが印象に残りました。

Jonghyun:（アドリブの歌は）最初にやってみたら反応がすごくて、その次のライヴでやらなかったら大変なことになる！と思ってずっとやっていたんですよね。

Yonghwa: 本当にもうやり尽くしてしまって、とてもしんどかったです！（笑）

Minhyuk: ジョンシンと僕はずっとプレッシャーを感じていました。次にアドリブを振られたらどうしよう？　もうやることがない！って（笑）。

Excite: さいたまスーパーアリーナ公演のDVDリリースを楽しみに待っている人に向けて、一言メッセージをお願いします。

Jonghyun: あのツアーに来た皆さんには、DVDを観ながらあのライヴを思い出して次のライヴを楽しみにしていてください、と言いたいです。来られなかった皆さんには、あれを観ながら「行きたいな」と思って、次のライヴを楽しみにしていてください！

Excite: 2013年の、CNBLUEとしての目標と個人的な目標を聞かせていただけますか？

Yonghwa: 韓国でも日本でも、もっともっと大きい会場でやってみたいです。個人的にはスノーボードをしたいです。とっても面白くて、最近ハマってることです！

Minhyuk: CNBLUEがもっともっと良くなるといいな、と思います。韓国や日本だけじゃなくて、全世界で受け入れられるようになりたいです。個人的には、ドラムの実力をもっともっと付けたいし、個人的な時間ももっとあればなあと思います。

Excite: ミンヒョクさんは随分大人っぽくなりましたよね？

Minhyuk: 僕がですか!？　もっともっとそうなりたいです！

Jonghyun: CNBLUEとしては、今までも充分よく頑張って成長したなあと思いますので、2013年も今まで通り大きい事故もなく、健康で、もっともっと頑張れたらそれだけでもいいと思います。個人的には運動が好きなので、いろいろとやりたいですね。最近は時間がなくてあまりできないので、体力もなくなって来てヤバいんですけど（笑）。

JONGHYUN

最近はいろいろとライヴがあるので、演奏の練習をしていますね。韓国でのライヴも終わったばっかりですし、（日本での）リリースイベントもありますし（2012年12月23日）。新曲をライヴで披露する準備もしていますよ。プライベートでは今、スノーボードにハマっています。前はそんなに好きではなかったし、まだ始めたばっかりなのでそんなに詳しくはないんですけれども…。今はメンバー全員の趣味になっていますし、早く上手くなりたいのでいいセットを買いに行きたいと思っています。

MINHYUK

みんなで一緒に住んでいるから、みんな同じじゃないかと思うんですけど、今、スノーボードにハマっています。ヨンファお兄さんがスノーボードを昔からしていて上手くて、僕たちにも教えてくれたので、好きになりました。2012年は１月1日にみんなで行ったんですけど、まだその後は1回も行ってないんです。そのほかは、韓国で【BLUE NIGHT】というコンサートをやった時に使ったドラムパッドを今、勉強しています。練習してますが、難しくて…。機器の使い方はもう全部習得したんですけど、曲中での使いどころがまだよくわからなくて…難しいですね。

YONGHWA

『ザ・シンプソンズ』のアニメーションは昔から好きだったんですけど、今でも放送しているんですよね。それを偶然見つけて観出して、また今ハマっています。1回につき1話のストーリーなんですけど、ちょっと理解できないような、ユニークなところが面白いんですよ。あとは、『ウォーキング・デッド』というゾンビのドラマも気に入っています。ゾンビ映画よりもクオリティが高く、すごく面白いですよ。ミンヒョクから勧められたのをきっかけに観始めました。

Robot is Yonghwa’s composition. When was it completed?

I made it around April 2012. Like “Where you are (the 2nd single)”, I also wrote the rhythm before writing the melody of this song. When I’m inspired with the theme first, it’s very easy to write it. Jungshin loved it a lot when he first heard it.

It’s sounds like a grown-up’s song.

Yonghwa: I’ve grown up a little (laughs).

Did you purposely try to express those sentiments?

Yonghwa: No, of course it came naturally.

(Laughs) The lyrics seem to portray the inner conflict of someone whose wishes aren’t realized by their own will. Have you ever experienced it yourself?

Yonghwa: Of course I have. Hasn’t everyone? Though the lyrics were actually inspired by those around me who are busy working hard.

It seemed like you were on the right track in 2012, even topping the Oricon chart. It comes as a surprise that a song like this was written in the middle of such (a success).

Jonghyun: In the end, we’re just like people our age. We’re trying hard toward our dreams, but we’re stressed out just the same because we’re not ‘robots’. This song describes the concerns of modern day individuals. Although it’s our own lives, many circumstances of reality limits what we can do; but no matter how our dream is stalled, we cannot give up. I think Yonghwa hyung figuratively wrote the lyrics about such situations.

Minhyuk: I think most people would sympathize with these sentiments. I didn’t have such a conflict recently, but sometimes it’s quite hard to do so many things for the year-end TV shows (laughs).

Jonghyun: I’m sure even elementary schoolchidren and kindergarteners would have these concerns.

It seems these feelings grow more as you get older, don’t you think?

Jonghyun: The older you get, the more obstacles you face in reality. It’s not just me alone but happens to those around me too, so perhaps that’s why these concerns get bigger over time.

Minhyuk: As for me, it might be harder for those who are younger. I feel like I’m more relaxed as I get older, though this is just my personal thoughts.

Is it because, no matter what others say, you feel that “I am who I am”?

Minhyuk: I’m not sure, but I think that once you grow up, your horizon of thought becomes wider.

Then would you say that you’re very broad-minded?

Minhyuk: I’m still not there yet (laughs).

Jonghyun: I assume that we get more stressed out because the older we become, the more responsibilities we have. When we’re little, the adults protect us and we’re not responsible for anything.

Yonghwa: I think we get more stressed out as we mature, more so than when we’re little. If we get married or have children, the responsibilities to such things will follow too. When we’re young, our mothers always protected us. I’m most stressed when I write songs, because I need to finish them under a time restraint.

Do you ever have trouble deciding between the songs that the fans want and the music that you want to create?

Yonghwa: No, I don’t have pressure about that.

Then, as a creative artist, are things going well as you want?

Yonghwa: Yes, they tend to.

So things are sound that way. What are the things that you wanted to express through your vocals and instruments?

Jonghyun: The theme follows the lyrics, so if the lyrics are sad, the instruments are played in a sad way, and if the lyrics are fun, the performance is also very lively.

But you also need to express the feelings that are not always simply sad or fun.

Jonghyun: Right. I’m not sure what it is, I played as if I can’t stand it. Perhaps the sense of urgency? I didn’t think about this during the recording, but listening to it after I finished, it sounded like the B part I sang sounded a bit overdone.

I guess you invested that much emotion into it. How about the drums?

Minhyuk: The song written by Yonghwa hyung was so great by itself, so I just felt good while playing the drums. I tried to give as much support, but the ideas suggested by Yonghwa hyung on the drums sounded much better and fun. So I wasn’t much of a help (laughs).

“Ring” is written by Yonghwa too. I love the “Fufufufufu~” part, it sounds like you’re relaxed and humming.

Yonghwa: This song was written while making “Robot”. I wrote the melody first for this one. I was very laid back and it came to me naturally. “Fufufufufu~” (sings) The warm feeling was key in arrangment. It’s about a guy who has the innocence of a child.

Is that image a reflection of yourself?

Yonghwa: I’d say yes. Though I said I was mature just a while ago… (laughs)

It’s great to have both sides (laughs). How did you feel the first time you heard this song, MH?

Minhyuk: When I first heard it, it sounded like a Christmas carol to me.

Yonghwa: Mr.KIA is another example, but I’ve written songs that gives British vibe from time to time. Before it was arranged, it didn’t feel like a carol. But it turned that way after arrangement.

“Starlit Night” was written by Jonghyun. How did you write it?

Jonghyun: In the middle of our Arena tour, we had a concert in Niigata. Feeling really excited and happy that night, I looked up at the sky and saw the shooting star. At that moment, I thought, “Let’s write a song with this inspiration!” and wrote it. It’s a present to the fans who loved us this year, expressing “Thank you”. I made it thinking it’d be nice to be able to sing it at the end of our concerts. So I made it as simple as possible, but with meaningful lyrics.

I can hear claps and get a warm vibe, like many people are singing as one.

Jonghyun: I made it completely for lives. Nothing hard, so that everyone can bring up the atmosphere. I let the members hear it, and they said “It sounds like an ending song for the encore.” I thought it would suit someone who has an innocent voice rather than someone who sings well, so I had Minhyuk sing the demo version. He was still asleep in the early morning, so I woke him up asking, “I have a favor to ask.” It seemed bothersome to him a little. (laughs) I ended up singing it in the single, but that guide song was nice. Minhyuk’s voice was good indeed. *unfortunately, Minhyuk voice wasn’t there at all when the song is complete :(*

Minhyuk: Thanks (laughs). I remember I woke up to sing, but when I went back to bed the melody kept resounding in my head so I couldn’t sleep.

As musicians, Yonghwa and Jonghyun have very different styles. Are you influenced by one another?

Yonghwa: No! (laughs)

Jonghyun: It’s not that we purposely say “let’s do different styles”, but we do what we like so nothing really enters our minds when we write songs. I think that’s why we’re not very influenced by one another. Unless we make something together.

Yonghwa: Wherever we go, Jonghyun would let others listen to his songs and asks, “How does this sound?” (laughs)

Jonghyun: Yonghwa hyung’s the same (laughs). I think all musicians would like others to listen to their songs after writing music. I ask, “How is it? How is it?” to get their responses and fix whatever’s not good enough.

I watched your concert in October at Saitama Super Arena. The stage organization was very nice, and reconfirmed that you’re a great rock band. I was surprised how non-vocal members were all very good at singing.

Yonghwa: We’re all good singers (laughs).

Jonghyun: No, we’re pretty bad! *I do feel that lately Jonghyun getting more funnier than before, he trying to joke around more*

It’s a shame Jungshin isn’t here today… *definately*

Jonghyun: Jungshin used to be the worst of all of us, but he’s improved a lot.

Yonghwa: He tried hard, so now he’s confident. Nowadays, when we sing all together all we can hear is Jungshin’s voice. * and I wish him sings more*

Your teamwork during the talk portion and the improvized singing was impressive.

Jonghyun: (Ad-lib singing) received so much applause the first time that we had to keep doing it afterwards.

Yonghwa: We were actually running out of repertoire, so we were on our toes! (laughs)

Minhyuk: Jungshin and I were under pressure the whole time. When I was asked to do the ad-lib next, I was like, what do I do? There’s nothing else left! (laughs)

Could you tell us your resolutions for yourself and CNBLUE in year 2013?

Yonghwa: Whether in Korea or Japan, I want to perform at a bigger venue. As for myself, I want to go snowboard. It’s so much fun, I’m into it!

Minhyuk: I wish CNBLUE got even bigger. Not only in Korea and Japan but I wish we could be a renowned band worldwide. As for myself, I want to train more on my drums and get more private time for myself.

Minhyuk, you seem to have grown up a lot!

Minhyuk: Me? I want to be even more mature!

Jonghyun: I think we’ve done well as CNBLUE and progressed much over the years, so it’d be enough to continue what we’ve done without any accidents and in good health. For myself, I like excercising so I want to try many things. I can’t do much these days due to busy schedules, it’s a shame my stamina can’t catch up with everything (laughs)

Lee Jong Hyun (Guitar&Vocal): Practice of performance, Snowboard

Lately we have some concerts, so I practice performance. We just ended concerts in Korea, and we are going to hold release event (in Japan) (as of 23 December 2012). We are preparing to unveil new songs live, too. As for my private time, I’m into snowboard now. I didn’t like it very much. I just started and don’t know well yet, though… Now it is a hobby of all of us members. I want to become skilled soon, so I want to go buy a good set (of tools).

Jung Yong Hwa (Guitar&Vocal): Anime “The Simpsons”, Drama “The Walking Dead”

I’ve liked “The Simpsons” since long ago. It’s still on air, so I began to watch it one day and got into it again. Each episode has its own story, and its unique sense of humor is really funny. And I love this zombie drama called “The Walking Dead”, too. It’s even better than zombie movies, really interesting. I began to watch it on MH’s recommendation.

Kang Min Hyuk (Drums) Snowboard, Drum pad

I guess all of us are the same because we live together, but I’m into snowboard now. Yonghwa hyung has done snowboard for a long time, and he’s great at it. Because he taught us, I came to like it. In 2012, we went snowboarding on 1 January all together, but we have never been there since that time. Other than that, I’m learning drum pad that I used at BLUE NIGHT concert in Korea. Although I practice, it’s difficult… I have already learned how to use the instrument, but I’m not sure where I should use it in songs… It is difficult.

*This article indeed long but for me it’s kind of pretty short. since I always so love with their interview in every of Japanese medias. As fans, I can see what they are thinking in their songs they promoted rather than their opinion about someone else songs or what happening in the showbiz stage. I was so upset with their interview for Re:Blue, I almost can get enough information about those new album.
