CNBLUE will release their 2nd album in Japan ‘What Turns You On?’ on Aug 28th. They will be also released ‘Lady’ ahead of this album. In this summer, they have lots of live in Japan like Zepp tour and Summer Sonic. ‘Lady’ is a disco tune song that has a mature atmosphere, but it contradicts with their public image that is serious and good young man. Which is in fact their true figure?

Everyone says to us do not get a tattoo (Laugh)

—Before an interview, Yonghwa, you have got tanned, haven’t you?

Yonghwa: eh… why everyone asks me so …?  Actually since I play golf recently, I’ve tanned. I didn’t get it on purpose, so I wonder why everyone asks me so.

—Eh? You said you play golf, right?

Yonghwa: Yes I am. I think it is better to learn as early as possible.

—…Well, What is it for?

Yonghwa: Because there is an image that adult plays golf. And I heard that it is good for posture fixing. I take the lesson as possible as I can only when I have time. Recently the number of young people playing golf has grown in Korea.

—Oh, I see. By the way, I am asking about your new single ‘Lady’. Is this a song for Japan?

Yonghwa: No, it is not. We don’t stick to in which country we would release it. We have a stance that we offer a song when we made at the time to release. This time, I had composed another ballad song but it is not like for summer, so I chose ‘Lady’.

—This song has mature atmosphere and it has dance tune.

Minhyuk: A rhythm sounds like disco. I think our live performance is going to be excited with this song. I am also excited to play a drum.

—There is an image that disco is sleazy in Japan. But your Japanese fan has an image that CNBLUE is a good young man and serious rock band.

Jonghyun: It is true. Our image for fan is “GENTLEMAN”… Since everyone has such as an image, so we have to be so …

—Huh? Are you meaning that this is not true in fact?

Jonghyun: Oh, no, no (Laugh).  If we did bad things, our image would get damage even though there is such a good image for us. So inevitably conclude that we have to be a GENTLEMAN as an image that everyone have.

Yonghwa: An image of good young man and GENTLEMAN fit with our image (said it firmly).

Jonghyun: So we are looked at with such an image in Korea.

Jungshin: In fact, we are not outstripping the image.

Yonghwa: We are always (with a proud face) “serious people”.

—Huh? Is it true?

Yonghwa: Yes. Because the leader (=Yonghwa) is like that!!

Jungshin: (in low voices) Too much to say.

Yonghwa: (Glance at Jungshin).

Jungshin: (in low voices) oh, just a kidding.

—If you are so serious people, I think that the image of the disco is unexpected.

Yonghwa: Yes it is, that’s correct (admit openly, everyone laughed). So it goes like that. Since ‘Lady’ is the sexiest song we ever released, we get a disco image on stage.

Jonghyun: We do our best to get the atmosphere of disco, but when we walk off the stage once, we turn out to be serious people.

—Umm. You artfully dodge our question …

Jonghyun: No, no. Actually we are told that we are serious people from FNC staff and people who are close to us, not only by fans.

Yonghwa: So, I play golf.

Jonghyun: Members escape to some sports.

—Don’t you go a disco or night club in your free time?

Jonghyun: Totally not.

—Are you sure?

Jonghyun: We might think that we are telling you a lie (Laugh) but absolutely not.

—But you think you want to go there, don’t you?

Yonghwa: It is going to cost money …

Jonghyun: I think we wanted to go there when we were around 20 years old though; we have been so busy and couldn’t go. Even if we were here now, we have no idea what do we do… (Laugh) And since now we are doing KFHI (Korea Food for Hungry International), we want to be a good model for everyone.

—There is an image that CNBLUE = Serious people and good young man, in both of Korea and Japan. Do you think what a catalyst is?

Jonghyun: No idea.

—Is it FNC’s plan?

Jonghyun: No, it is not.

Yonghwa: It might be because we often wear a suit.

Jonghyun: Yes! It is it!

Yonghwa: Since we have worn a suit from the beginning, our image might be serious. Actually, when we wear a suit, we look so cool (Laugh)

Jonghyun: We didn’t have free time at all at the beginning of our debut. And now, even if we had it, we have no idea how to play because we have not been to play. So we do some sports.

—That’s why you play golf or muscle training.

Yonghwa: Well, I think public image is made by fans or everyone, not by us. Now, CNBLUE = Serious people and good young man, GENTLEMAN. It is okay for us now.

Jungshin: And people have an image for us the rock band that a tattoo does not match (Laugh). Everyone says to us do not get a tattoo.

Jonghyun: Not only tattoo, I had had three piercing holes in my ears but now I have never wear them.

—Even if you say so, in fact you might have lots of tattoos on your back (laugh)

All: No, no.

Yonghwa: But, kkk (awless smile). My back is absolutely full of tattoos.

—Wow, shows us!

Yonghwa: I am sorry. It is a secret between you and me. (*just kidding all (Laugh))

I thought that the impression when we listened to this song is important.

 PATi-PATi sept 13.5

—Well, can I hear about a song ‘Don’t Care’? What kind of theme did you make this song with?

Yonghwa: This is the song that I want people who think that oneself are alone to hear this song. Don’t worry because I have family and friends … I wrote such a message.

—You wrote this lyric by replacing the fans and you.

Yonghwa: Since I am in this position, I could write this lyric. We have ‘the fan’ that is kind of special position for us, not only family and friends. Because I have the special privilege which general people don’t have, the existence of the fans come out in my head naturally. We have not had such a song that was expressing directly the connection with the fan and us, I wanted to write about this connection.

—Can we ask you about the sound of this song? Why did you make this such as an acoustic sound?

Yonghwa: Since the original was so. About a guitar, we used acoustic guitar only but at the time of recording, Jonghyun put the electric guitar sounds.

—The bridge was played by the brass horns, it is very impressive.

Yonghwa: Most of the songs have rap or the guitar solo part after chorus, but this song has the brass horns. This is the point of this song.

Minhyuk: Since I love that part, I attached my mind about the tone of my drum when I recorded it. I listened to it many times; I thought the sounds that fit with this song’s atmosphere.

Yonghwa: This song is not fancy but I thought that the impression when we listened to this song is important. So as Minhyuk had said, we cared about even one tone of the drum.

— As a result, it turns out contrasting song from ‘Lady’ that has fancy and digital sounds.

Jonghyun: It seems to have a style like Europe or England.

Yonghwa: Actually, there are some points in this song. Since it has a violin tone in the bridge, we can feel Oriental atmosphere. Depends on a person who listen to it the impression would be different.

Jungshin: There may be the people thinking this song to be a sad song. The bass line is simple in this song. If ‘Lady’ has an atmosphere such as digital, ‘Don’t Care’ has acoustic sound. So I feel this one seems more “band sound”.

—‘Monday’ is a song that was made from Yonghwa’s delusion of his specialty?

Yonghwa: Yes it is. The office worker would feel happy on Friday and they would also feel hard on Sunday night, and then greet Monday morning. I imagined like that and wrote this lyric.

—Your world tour will be continued after Zepp tour in Japan. What do you look forward to?

Yonghwa: A dinner with staff after live. I look forward to eat local food.

—Do you drink?

Minhyuk: Since we are tired after a live.

Jungshin: Not too much drink.

Yonghwa: We only drink the first one glass.

—You are serious people even in such as situation.

Yonghwa: Sure!!

—Don’t you think you want to break down that image?

Yonghwa: More than 20 years, we are the same like this, so we can’t. We will stay like this now and in the future.

What is a color of CNBLUE’s personal plane?

 PATi-PATi sept 13.6

—You told us your epic plan that after you conquered the world in your world tour, you will buy your personal plane, and whenever you want to eat Sushi, you would come to Japan using that plane. If it came true, is the body of your plane blue?

Yonghwa: No, Black!

—Eh? Why?

Yonghwa: Because the spots are not easy to notice. (Everyone laughs) The inside makes black not to become dirty.

Jungshin: But If it was all back, it would be hard to see by people, isn’t it?

Yonghwa: It is okay because I make it highlighted block!

—When this plan would become real?

Yonghwa: Since this time’s world tour is our first time one, it might be around next world tour (Laugh)

CNBLUE PATi PATi Interview July Issue 2013

 PATi PATi JULY 13 ISSUE1

CNBLUE’s Melody

World tour is full in swing; they are dashing for the world. They will hold Zepp tour in Japan from July, too. So we tried to think the attraction their songs again. There are many stories we can feel “I see!” toward their composing attitude.

At their concert in Hong Kong, for example, they prepared Jonghyun’s surprise birthday event, CNBLUE thoroughly enjoy their first world tour themselves. Why their music is supported so much in the world? We considered its attraction in musical side.

“If it isn’t in English, I may burst out laughing.”

-We’ll analyze you at musical point. Firstly, the melody; “Blind Love” and “These days” melody, it’s J-pop for you?

Jonghyun: Ah~…… these main melodies is like Asia rather than like Japan.

-I think so. Your music isn’t western music or J-pop or K-pop… but melody always comes with oriental essence. I guess western people can’t compose such a melody. So, just oriental melody like “Blind Love”, your big weapon that battle in the world, that’s why your music becomes popular in the world, I think.

Jungshin: Thank you.

Minhyuk: I’m glad. (smile)

-Oh… How do you come up with such oriental melody?

Jonghyun: It’s because we’re listening music from several countries. They remain in myself little by little and may become melody like ‘Which country has this music?’

Yonghwa: And K-pop is a topic of conversation now, so I think we can hold world tour.

PATi PATi JULY 13 ISSUE3

-Does essence of K-pop contain in CNBLUE?

All: Yes it does (clearly).

Jonghyun: Now K-pop is like American, but traditional Korean melody is naturally in us. I think the part also creates oriental music.

Jungshin: No matter how much we arrange our songs as western, but the Asian vibes still appear in our songs because we didn’t grow up in foreign countries.

Jonghyun: But there are melodies that we feel missed in spite of American such as Bruno Mars, aren’t there? They’re interesting, too.

Jungshin: Our melodies are in the middle of western pops and Asian melody.

-“Where you are” and “Come on” have feeling as western melodies.

Jungshin: I suppose when western people come to our concerts, they are pleased because of the elements.

Minhyuk: We aren’t puposely to make like western music, and Hyungs have composed very freely. That’s why it became so.

-Recently Yonghwa-san revealed “I want to get No.1 at Billboard” at each countries’ media interview. When did you start to be conscious of the world?

Yonghwa: I’ve never been conscious that we active the world into a vision. So, I’m not western music best principal at all. I have been doing with such feelings “Let’s make nice melody and song.” The result of it links with our recent activity. So, I’ve not written a song that I’m conscious of the world.

-I see. I’m surprised to hear it.

Yonghwa: Yes. At YouTube, the animations are uploaded; they contain reactions of fans all over the world when they listened to our song at first. About “I’m sorry” reaction, though its lyrics are almost in Korean, all of them were singing a part of “I’m sorry” from second verse. When we watch it, we feel strange. “Oh, they’re singing.” haha

-I see. Next I’ll analyze the lyrics. Like “I’m sorry”, Yonghwa-san is good at writing love songs about a man goes on being attached a woman he can’t tell his feeling or a separated woman, isn’t he?

Jonghyun: Ahahahahahah!!

PATi PATi JULY 13 ISSUE

-Aren’t you afraid that fans see such lyrics and may misunderstand ” Does Yonghwa is such a person…”?

Dongsaengs: Kkkkkkkk (They burst out laughing with their head down)

Yonghwa: I don’t care (Exactly). Except this, like “ring”, a miserable man grieves for a separated woman, like I want you to come back to me. You appear even my dream every night. I’m waiting your call. Just when can I eat the pancake baked you? While “Wake up” is written a man who is too miserable to be Oasis or Bon Jovi. There are lyrics written a coward man. It’s more interesting to write a one-sided man. Moreover it’s interested for me to express in English.

-Because of English, you can grandly write and sing such songs about a miserable man.

Yonghwa: I can write more direct in English. Conversely if I write it in Korean or Japanese, I may burst out laughing with singing, haha! For example, ‘Pancake’ in “ring”. I chose this word because this is English. I can express he is waiting forher with such lovely feeling by comparing to her handmade sweets. It’s an interesting point of English.

(Yonghwa’s points of view about writing in English is same with me kkkk)

-Imagine Yonghwa-san’s trick when writing lyrics! haha CNBLUE’s world tour still on, will you become a top of the world when you finish it?

Yonghwa: We work hard from now on to be so. We are stepping forward step by step to the world. As we do so, we are improving.

– And the end of improving?

Yonghwa: Will we fly around the world by chartered plane!?

Dongsaengs: Ooohhhhh (smile)

Yonghwa: If we become so, when I feel hungry in Korea, I’ll go to Japan to eat sushi by my plane, hahaha!

CNBLUE is a first Korean rock band who doing a World Tour. Right after debut, they are known as an alternative rock band, they released medium tempo love song this time. We interviewed them about the new song “Blind Love” composed by Jonghyun.

“Blind Love” was released on April 24th. It is their 5th single CD who first time contain love song and a medium tune song for CNBLUE.

Jonghyun: This is kind of “spring” song. At first, I’ve written this song’s lyric in impression of Sakura (cherry blossom). But I didn’t want to make this song for only “spring”, so I’ve changed the lyric.

When I listen to this melody, I feel like seeing cherry blossom petals swirl.

Jonghyun: Well, the original lyric was “you are shining in swirling petals~”. However some of my Japanese friends and our staff said there are lots of Sakura songs in Japan. So I’ve changed it.

Jungshin: Since this time’s the title song has a different image from our previous songs, I was worried that people who listened this song feel a little confused. But it is a love song and melody like J-pop, so I think Japanese Fan will likes this song.

Minhyuk: This is an easy listening song. We also felt fresh feeling.

Yonghwa: We had strong songs up to now, though we have tender song this time. You can feel different style of us.

Almost of your songs were rock tune after your major debut in Japan.

Yonghwa: Yes we are. Most of our songs we’ve written are about a positive thinking like “HOPE”.

pati pati mag12

Did you need courage to make such a medium tune love song as a title song?

Jonghyun: It seemed a “challenge” for me. We try a ballad as a rock band.

Yonghwa: Ummm, it was like one of temptation rather than challenge for me.

What song who comes into your mind immediately as a rock band’s ballad song?

Jonghyun: Bon Jovi “Always” and Oasis “Don’t Look Back In Anger”. These two songs are great as ballad songs.

Yonghwa: Bon Jovi “All About Lovin’ you”.

Jungshin: Bon Jovi is good and MR.BIG.

Minhyuk: Every song that they have said until now (Minhyuk had the same opinion with Jonghyun and Yonghwa).

Jonghyun: See, ballad song is important one for a rock band. I hope our song will be so.

Since this song’s lyric is almost written in Japanese, it’s easy to understand for Japanese fans.

Jonghyun: This song is the love song that anyone has experienced once and has a nostalgic feeling. “No matter how far our distance is, I always love you~”.

The couple in this song already broke up, didn’t they?

Jonghyun: Yes, they did, seems sad though. I would be lying if I said they don’t break up. Even though they broke up, love is blind. This is why “Blind Love”

Then we would like to interviewed you about “With Your Eyes”.

Jonghyun: Actually, we were divided between “Blind Love” or “With Your Eyes” as a title song. In fact many staff chose “With your eyes”.

“With Your Eyes” has more CNBLUE’s sound.

Jonghyun: I think so. “With Your Eyes” is also a good song. “Greedy man” was composed and written a by Yonghwa though; all songs “Blind Love”, “With your eyes”, “Greedy man” are have a good lyrics.

Did you write a lyric of “With Your Eyes” purposely for  “Love”?

Jonghyun: No. It’s about a “Life”.  I can not surely say “A life is like this” in my age. However this is a message that “Since it’s your own life, you must have responsibility for your life”.

Then what about “Greedy Man” composed by Yonghwa?

Yonghwa: This song describes a message “where are you? ”, “I’ll keep loving you”. A lyric of biased love is more interesting than a lyric that say straightly “I love you”, and I think listener also feels so toward this song.

I see. After you released this single, you are going to do World Tour and then ZEPP tour in Japan.

Yonghwa: We just take a step toward the world including Japan. We’ll always do our best.

pati pati mag7

Do CNBLUE members give support to “Blind Love”?

Jonghyun:  Of course they are.

Yonghwa:  What do you mean by “Love is Blind”?

Does it like a straight love. No cheating?

Jonghyun: Yes it does.

Jungshin: It doesn’t mean that you give up your job and to be besotted.

Nobody is here like this type (cheating, besotted and giving up)?

Minhyuk: Nobody.

Jonghyun: Because everybody works hard.

Yonghwa: We have to keep working hard while we are young.
